What is the Teal Pumpkin Project?

It started with an idea in 2012, a mom in Tennessee named Becky Basalone was trying to figure out how to make Halloween safe and fun for her food-allergic son. Lightbulb moment! She decides to use a teal-painted pumpkin to signal that she's got non-food treats available. Why teal? Well, teal happens to be the color of food allergy awareness. It's like the Batman signal, but for inclusive trick-or-treating! Little did she know, she was about to start a Halloween revolution!

Fast forward to 2014, and the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization caught wind of Becky's brilliant idea. They were like, "Hold my epinephrine auto-injector, we're taking this nationwide!" And boom! The Teal Pumpkin Project was officially born.

The goal of the Teal Pumpkin Project is simple: make Halloween a blast for ALL kids. It's about creating a sense of belonging. Imagine being the kid who always has to sit out or trade away most of their Halloween haul. Bummer, right? The Teal Pumpkin Project is changing that story.

Here's the mission in a nutshell (a nut-free one, of course):

  1. Raise awareness about food allergies (because knowledge is power, folks!)

  2. Promote inclusion of all trick-or-treaters (because FOMO is real, even on Halloween)

  3. Offer an alternative to traditional Halloween candy (turns out, kids like toys too. Who knew?)

But here's the kicker - it's not just about the kids with allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project is teaching all of us a valuable lesson about compassion and community. It's showing kids that being inclusive is cool. And let's be real, in today's world, couldn't we all use a little more of that?

So, whether you're a Halloween newbie or a seasoned pro, the Teal Pumpkin Project is a chance to level up your Trick-or-Treat game. It's about making memories, spreading joy, and maybe, just maybe, being the house that kids remember for years to come. Not because you gave out the best candy, but because you made everyone feel welcome.

And isn't that what the spirit of Halloween is really about? Okay, okay, it's also about the costumes and spooky decorations. But you get my point!

The Teal Pumpkin Project and Veganism

At first glance, you might wonder what a food allergy awareness campaign has to do with veganism. But trust me, these two causes are more closely linked than you might think!

The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages people to offer non-food treats / allergy-friendly treats on Halloween, making the holiday safe and inclusive for children with food allergies. Now, here's where it gets interesting for us vegans: many of these non-food treats / allergy-friendly treats are automatically vegan-friendly! We're talking stickers, small toys, puzzles and other certified allergy-friendly sweets that don't contain any animal products.

But the connection goes deeper than just shared treat options. Both the vegan movement and the Teal Pumpkin Project are rooted in compassion and inclusivity. Vegans choose their lifestyle to avoid harm to animals and reduce environmental impact. Similarly, the Teal Pumpkin Project aims to prevent harm to children with allergies and create an inclusive environment where everyone can participate.

I've found that many vegan parents are naturally drawn to the Teal Pumpkin Project because it aligns with their values of kindness and consideration for others. Plus, it solves the dilemma of finding vegan candy options that are also safe for kids with various allergies.

Check out the Teal Pumpkin Project Map - go to their website to find houses participating in an allergy-friendly Halloween and plan your Trick-or-Treating route or add your address so Trick-or-Treaters know to stop by!

Why the Teal Pumpkin Project Matters

Let's start with some numbers, did you know that food allergies affect about 8% of children in the United States? That's roughly 1 in 13 kids! It's like having a whole classroom of kids who can't enjoy Halloween the way we used to. And let me tell you, that's scarier than any haunted house I've been through.

Now, let's talk about Halloween candy. Peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, DYES! (check out this article on artificial and natural food dyes) – they're hiding in practically everything. My first Halloween with my kids, I spent half the evening reading candy labels and googling ingredients. Let me tell you, it was an eye-opening experience. Who knew that some of the red candy coloring comes from crushed bugs!

Common Halloween candy allergens include:

  • Peanuts

  • Tree nuts

  • Milk

  • Eggs

  • Soy

  • Wheat

  • Gluten

  • Dyes

But here's the thing that really gets me…the emotional impact on kids with dietary restrictions and food allergies during Halloween. Halloween should be about fun and excitement, not disappointment and exclusion.

These kids often feel left out and sometimes are even bullied. Imagine going to a birthday party where you can't eat the cake, now multiply that by an entire neighborhood of houses. It's enough to make any kid want to hang up their superhero cape for good.

But wait! Before you start feeling gloomy, let me tell you about the silver lining, the benefits of inclusive Halloween celebrations. This is where the Teal Pumpkin Project really shines!

  • It teaches empathy and inclusivity. I've seen non-vegan kids and kids without allergies get excited about non-food treats, asking questions and learning about their friends' diets. It can be like a mini lesson in compassion.

  • It reduces the stress and anxiety for parents of children with diverse diets. I can't tell you how many grateful parents have nearly hugged me when they see my teal pumpkin.

  • Plot twist – inclusive celebrations can actually be more fun for everyone! I've seen kids trade their candy for the cool little toys and trinkets from teal pumpkin houses.

So, why does the Teal Pumpkin Project matter?

Because it's about more than just allergies and veganism.

It's about creating a world where every child can experience the magic of Halloween. It's about building a community that looks out for each other. And let's be honest, it's about making sure that the only scary things on Halloween are the costumes and decorations – not the treats.

Spreading Awareness and Promoting the Teal Pumpkin Project in Your Community

Now, you might be thinking, "This sounds great, but how do I get my community on board?" Don't worry, I've got some tricks up my sleeve (and they're all treats, I promise)!

  1. Be the Change - Start by participating yourself! Paint a pumpkin teal and place it on your porch. Offer non-food treats alongside any allergy-friendly, vegan candy options you might have. You'd be surprised how many conversations this can spark with curious neighbors and trick-or-treaters.

  2. Social Media Magic - Use your social platforms to spread the word. Share photos of your teal pumpkin, post infographics about the project and use hashtags like #TealPumpkinProject and #InclusiveHalloween.

  3. Team Up with Local Businesses - Reach out to local shops, cafes or community centers. Ask if they'd be willing to display information about the Teal Pumpkin Project or even participate by offering non-food / allergy-friendly, vegan treats.

  4. School Zone - If you have kids, talk to their teachers or the PTA about incorporating the Teal Pumpkin Project into school Halloween celebrations. Many schools are already nut-free, so this is a natural extension of existing allergy awareness.

  5. Neighborhood Nextdoor - Use neighborhood apps or community forums to spread the word. You could even organize a teal pumpkin scavenger hunt in your area!

Educating Others About the Mission

When it comes to educating others about the Teal Pumpkin Project, I've found that a friendly, non-judgmental approach works best.

Here are some talking points I use:

  • Explain that the project isn't about eliminating candy, rather about providing safe options for ALL children.

  • Share statistics about food allergies to highlight the importance of the initiative. - 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, that’s 2 kids in every classroom and that doesn’t even include adults

  • Emphasize how the project promotes inclusivity and allows all children to experience the joy of Trick-or-Treating.

  • Point out that many non-food treats are inexpensive and can be bought in bulk.

  • Highlight the connection to veganism and how it creates a more compassionate Halloween for both animals and humans.

Grab some Teal Pumpkin Project flyers or brochures to keep on hand to give to interested neighbors, you can download and print them from the Food Allergy Research and Education’s (FARE) website.

Remember, enthusiasm is contagious! The more excited you are about it, the more likely others are to catch on.

Teal Pumpkin Project Decorations and Gear

Of course Trick-or-Treaters need a way to know that your house is safe and allergy or vegan-friendly! Here are some ideas on simple decorations you can put out in the front yard.
